Each stage in this remake was given an extra secret star as well as 15 secret hidden stages for an extended gameplay experience that is pretty cool, plus they included some Mario Party style minigames and a multiplayer (which no longer works) which are great time wasters in their own. But again, it's something you get used to easily so it works out. It should have been closer to the Original where any character can use any power up when needed. And sure it defintiely gives each character some real use and keeps you from just sticking with one guy throughout the game but still. The addition of playing as 3 extra characters really helps shake up the gameplay and just like in Super Mario Brothers 2, each character has their own unique skill set along with a unique power up.Īnd if there's one thing I had to nitpick about it would be this, the original trailer showed all 4 characters able to use the Wing Cap, but only Mario can use it, just as an example.
Sure the controls are a little tricky on this port with no joystick but they're easy to get used to btw if you are playing this game today play it on a 3DS, the joystick makes it even better. Even on an original fat DS the graphics of this game look much cleaner and slicker than the original game, which was super blocky. This game is to the original Super Mario 64 what Sonic 3 and Knuckles is to the original Sonic 3. Compare its graphics to the later N64 titles and call it better than Conker's Bad Fur Day or Ocarina of Time honestly. The original Mario 64, while an amazing game for its time has not aged the best and it had a bit of a bad influence on video games they got envious and wanted to be Super Mario 64 leading to a lot of bad Platformers, granted we've had platformers even better than it like the original Spyro Trilogy, Gex: Enter the Gecko or the Banjo-Kazooie games but my point still stands. Not many people knew what to think of porting a game from 8 years ago onto a modern system, but considering its Mario people gave it a chance, and it's one of the many killer apps for the DS lineup to this day. I've seen some very disastrous handheld from home ports like Sonic: Lost World, or a lot of the games that were ported to the Sega Game Gear which just got, totally whitewashed. When porting a game meant for a home console over to a handheld system anything could go wrong, and I do mean anything. So this was a very progressive system for its day and age, considering it ushered in the 4th and 5th generations of Pokemon this says a lot by itself. At the time this was made not even the iPod had a touchscreen. While it's true the GBA SP was the first handheld system to have an internal light to allow for brighter screens making it easier to see and nighttime gameplay, this was the very first system to utilize a touchscreen interface making gameplay more interactive and challenging.
